There are countless species of flora and fauna in Madeira, making it an authentic sanctuary well worth exploring. The best way of doing this is to walk along a “Levada”.
“Levadas” are narrow canals that were built in the 16th century, which stretch across the mountains of Madeira, along more than 2150 km. To follow one is to exercise the senses. Penetrate the forest and perceive the scent in the air; stop by a waterfall and bathe in the fresh water; climb the highest mountain and gaze into the sky. Experience unique moments in a setting made of serene colour, silence and stillness.
Alongside with exploring “Levadas” which offer varying levels of exertion, there are also other landscape-challenging activities available, such as mountain climbing, trekking, canoeing, canyoning, mountain biking, hang-gliding, parasailing and jeep safaris, which get the adrenaline flowing. For those who prefer the sea, there is surf, windsurf, sailing and diving.
For something less strenuous, chose from a wide choice of boat rides, hop in a balloon or admire the view from a helicopter. Chose any viewpoint from which to admire the scenery these islands have to offer, and be mesmerized by nature’s glory.
